The terms of a mountain stay

A floor plan, an ownership agreement and a lift timetable can change the meaning of the same Alpine address.
A mountain address comes with a second description, usually found several pages after the photograph. It explains when you can use it, how you reach it and which parts of daily life remain your responsibility.
I find that description especially interesting this week. Graubünden’s approval of Flims’s revised local plan turns attention towards development within the existing settlement. At one marketed project, the distinction between a managed apartment and an unrestricted second home is more consequential than the view they might share.
For a shorter stay, the same habit of reading closely pays off. In Sils Maria, choosing the room category changes the balance between intimacy and space. In St. Moritz, a separate living room gives a working visit a different shape. Above Pontresina, the mountain hotel and the ski slopes are running to different calendars.
These are not incidental details to settle after deciding where to go. They are part of the decision. A good address should accommodate the visit you have in mind, whether that means five nights with a book, a week with a laptop or a single evening beyond the last cable car.
