The shorter calendar

In late October, the operating calendar becomes part of the choice of address.
I like a mountain weekend with one good reason to go. In late October, that reason needs a date beside it.
This week, theatre brings four national languages to Scuol Palace and Nairs, while Martin Dalsass’s Wild Table reaches its final weekend in St. Moritz. Neither asks us to imagine a new hotel. Both change what an established address can offer over a particular three days.
The room choice follows from that purpose. At the Palace, a separate living room gives the intervals somewhere to unfold. At Grace La Margna, staying upstairs extends an evening without adding another journey. A Laax apartment answers a different brief: enough domestic space to make several ordinary working days feel manageable.
The smaller calendar matters too. Gasthaus Mayor’s autumn season ends on Sunday; a recommendation for this weekend would become misleading if carried unaltered into next week. In the Ruinaulta, night road closures change the route rather than the reason for travelling.
The pleasure of the quieter season is not that everything remains available. It is choosing a visit around what is actually happening, and leaving the rest of the day unclaimed.
