A little more room

AlpeanGlow

The useful space between a hotel stay and a home of your own.

A kitchen, a table and a door that closes can change the character of a mountain stay. They give a few days away the possibility of becoming an ordinary week, with room for breakfast at home, an unfinished piece of work and a less scheduled evening.

This week's announcement from Scuol puts that choice in focus. Plavna is due to open in December, bringing serviced apartments into the Belvedere hotel family's orbit. The attraction is the possibility of choosing how much service to add to a domestic base. The detail to read carefully is what the apartment rate actually includes.

Elsewhere, the choices are more immediate. Celerina/Schlarigna offers both a hotel with a new executive chef and studios whose modest kitchen facilities deserve a closer look. In Flims, a family-run hotel and a mountain guesthouse make very different promises about comfort, company and connection.

I would choose the shape of the week before choosing the room. A holiday with occasional email needs less infrastructure than five days of calls. A deliberate break from work can benefit from the very absence of it. This edition is about recognising the difference before unpacking.

Scuol adds an apartment option

AlpeanGlow

Plavna's December opening puts a kitchen and optional hotel services in the same conversation.

Scuol's next accommodation opening is for the winter diary. In a report published on 29 September, htr describes Plavna's planned December debut on the former Hotel Post site. The operator confirms 20 serviced apartments, connected to the Belvedere hotel and the baths. It is a future opening, not an option for an October arrival.

The useful distinction is domestic space with services close by. Apartment specifications include a kitchenette with a dishwasher, living and dining space, a balcony and Wi-Fi. Separate bedrooms are offered outside the studio category. For a longer stay, that makes the apartment format worth comparing with a conventional hotel room, especially when meals and waking hours need not follow the hotel's rhythm.

There is a corresponding piece of homework. The connection to the baths should not be read as blanket inclusion: the apartment page presents bath tickets and spa treatments as services that can be booked. Ask for the cost of the apartment and the services you intend to use together. A hotel package may still be the simpler choice for someone wanting most meals and leisure arrangements settled in advance.

December preview. Request the exact apartment plan, service inclusions and opening-date assurance before committing. No date-specific availability or tariff has been verified.

A new chef, an old family story

AlpeanGlow

Cresta Palace and Schweizerhof Flims offer two reasons to return to established addresses.

A change in the kitchen and continuity in the family provide this week's reasons to revisit two hotels introduced in our first edition. Neither is a new opening.

Cresta Palace, Celerina/Schlarigna

htr reports that Florian Mainzger became executive chef on 1 October, succeeding the retiring Rolf Schmitz, who will support the transition. The appointment gives a future stay a fresh culinary question, rather than proof that the menus have already changed. Ask what will be served during your dates.

The 1906 hotel also offers a choice of visual character. Its operator distinguishes the rooms modernised in 2022 from Art Nouveau rooms renovated in 2025. Someone drawn to the building's period identity should book a named category rather than assume that every room shares it. This is the stronger enquiry for a guest who wants the restaurant to help shape the stay, with the precise room style and dining schedule agreed beforehand.

Schweizerhof, Flims Waldhaus

A 30 September profile in Hotellerie Gastronomie Zeitung turns to the fourth generation of the Schmidt family and the hotel's treatment of its own history, including guided and audio tours. The Belle Époque hotel above Flims Waldhaus offers a different kind of continuity: the building and the people running it are part of the reason to stay.

Choose this enquiry for an interest in the house itself, rather than a new culinary appointment. Confirm the week's tour programme if that is part of the draw. For both hotels, the room category, restaurant opening days and full stay quotation matter more than a generic headline rate.

A table for the working week

AlpeanGlow

INN LODGE's studios offer domestic basics, with clear limits for a week of calls.

Celerina/Schlarigna's new chef appointment at Cresta Palace is the week's hotel news, but a working visit may call for a more self-contained base. INN LODGE is an established address, newly selected here, whose operator advertises year-round opening and free laundry facilities.

The Studio M+ provides 33 square metres, a kitchenette with two hotplates and a fridge, a table with four chairs, a double bed and a sofa bed. Wi-Fi is included. Those are useful domestic facts: breakfast can be made before the first call, and the table need not double as a bedside shelf.

The smaller Studio S is listed at 23–30 square metres with a two-person table. It is the leaner alternative for a solo stay; M+ buys more floor area rather than a separate office. Neither specification establishes an ergonomic desk, tested bandwidth or private space for simultaneous calls. For two people working different schedules, a one-room layout may be the deciding limitation.

A stay to test, not a verified office. Ask about the connection, table position and room outlook before booking a working week. The studio pages list breakfast as an optional CHF 19 per adult per day; a kitchenette does not mean breakfast service is included. Exact dates and rates remain to be quoted.

Bargis, with fewer connections

AlpeanGlow

A mountain guesthouse above Flims makes a clear case for leaving work behind.

Above Flims, Berghaus Bargis offers a different proposition from the village's full-service hotels. It is a mountain guesthouse, not a private cabin: the Belmont double rooms share bathroom facilities, and the accommodation also includes a family room and a dormitory. The choice is a private bedroom within a communal house, with the corresponding limits on privacy.

The operator's access notes are unusually helpful. Bargis is car-free; the house can be reached by bus, while the walk from the last paid parking at Fidaz Waldrand is described as about an hour. Check the actual bus timetable before choosing this option with luggage.

There is no guest Wi-Fi. The operator points to mobile reception on a nearby rise, which should not be treated as a reliable working connection. Compared with an apartment in Celerina, this is a deliberate surrender of convenience. It makes more sense for time outside and an evening without calls than as a cheaper remote office.

The published double-room tariff is CHF 74 per adult per night with breakfast, plus CHF 5 adult visitor tax. Single occupancy carries a supplement. The restaurant lists 18 October as its final summer day; room dates need a separate enquiry. Friday and Saturday evening meals require reservation. Check the current opening information when arranging the stay.

What this edition is based on

AlpeanGlow

Reporting dates, operator evidence and the limits of the accommodation checks.

Research was checked on 2 October 2026. Google News and the destination source register were used for discovery, followed by exact reports and operator or municipal pages. Accommodation searches covered all ten AlpeanGlow destinations. A search result alone did not qualify a stay for selection.

The principal dated reporting is htr's 29 September Plavna announcement and 2 October chef appointment, together with the 30 September Schweizerhof profile in Hotellerie Gastronomie Zeitung. Accommodation specifications come from the operators. This is desk research, not a record of visits or independently tested services.

Plavna is a December preview. INN LODGE and Bargis are established properties newly selected for this edition; Cresta Palace and Schweizerhof return because of current reporting. Booking pages do not establish available rooms on particular dates. Wi-Fi speed has not been tested, and published tariffs should be read with their stated basis and exclusions.

The issue photograph is an archive image credited to Corsin Taisch on Unsplash, identified by the photographer with Scuol. It illustrates the area, not Plavna, and is not evidence of this week's weather. Accommodation-card images are also identified as destination views rather than photographs of the properties.
